Work begins on 54 new homes in Coventry

Work has begun on the construction of 54 new homes in Holbrooks. The properties along Meadow Road are all affordable housing and will be built on land which was previously used as private allotments.

Current houses along Meadow Road have begun to be demolished to pave way for the new accommodation. However, residents have expressed their disappointment at the social housing project.

Residents have bid farewell to their childhood homes as properties are being knocked down. One Facebook user wrote: "So sad to see the allotment go, I live on Houldsworth Crescent."

Meanwhile, another resident wrote: "I drove past those houses the other day. Lived there for 14 years right opposite them and knew the owners." One added: "So sad. My grandparents' house and the home my dad and his sisters were born in gone but never forgotten."

A council committee approved the plans for the 54 homes in Holbrooks earlier this year. More than 200 people signed a petition against the plans, which described the area as a "haven for wildlife" inhabited by frogs, toads, newts and bats.

Residents also fear the homes will cause parking issues, traffic, noise and flooding problems, with 27 people writing letters of objection. Cllr Lancaster previously told CoventryLive it was "like a green lung being removed" for the residents.
