Struggle against Garbage Dump near creamatiom ground continues NGT give notices to Govt.
Jalandhar 03 August 2024 ( Vikrant Madaan) : Representatives of Joint Action Committee Model Town Jalandhar (Regd), headed by Shri
Varinder Malik and Jaswinder Singh Sahni met CM Bhagwant Mann at his Jalandhar residence
on 25.07.2024 regarding the illegal open garbage dump opposite Model Town cremation ground. They made him aware of the fact that despite months of protests, hundreds of complaints, action committees, reports and promises, nothing has changed on the ground and no action has been taken by the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar. The CM assured them that action will be taken at the earliest.
Shri Varinder Malik, Chairman, Joint Action Committee Model Town Jalandhar (Regd), had also filed a case regarding this in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) whose first hearing was held by the Principal Bench (NGT) on May 10, 2024. NGT has issued notices to Municipal Commissioner & District Magistrate Jalandhar and Member Secretary of Punjab Pollution Control Board regarding this issue. The next date of the hearing is on August 27 2024 and replies from the above are expected. Members of the Joint Action Committee Model Town Jalandhar (Regd), have been advocating strongly for sustainable garbage disposal and recycling, afforestation and water harvesting in the city. The members include Tejasvi Minhas, Manmeet Singh Sodhi, Sunil Chopra, Ram Prakash Gambhir, Vinay Grover, Col. Amrik Singh, Swatanter Chawla, Aman Setia, Narinder Kumar Mehtra, Jagdeep Singh Nanda, Harjinder Singh, Karadeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Vivek Bhardwaj and hundreds of other residents of Model Town, GTB Nagar, Kewal Vihar, Green Model Town and New Model Town.
It is to be noted that Jalandhar has become the garbage capital of Punjab with open dumping going on, against all corporation, state and national rules. Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016 are yet to be implemented in any manner in the city, even though crores of tax payer money has been recklessly spent. Open garbage along with bad road and jammed sewers are adversely affecting the lives of all the residents of the area.Especially the road from Model Town Cremation Ground to Sangha Chowk is in a very bad shape and no repair work has been done for months, despite multiple protests from the residents.
