*Gangubai Hangal,* was an Indian singer of the _khyal_ genre of _Hindustani classical music,_ who was known for her deep and powerful voice. Hangal belonged to the _Kirana gharana._
Hangal struggled in a society where singing was not considered an appropriate profession for women. She also served as honorary music professor in Karnataka University. She was born on 5 March 1913.
